The second song of Eternal Sunshine is "bye." This touching track explores the emotional journey of finally letting go of someone you once held on to for dear life. It captures the bittersweet realization that, despite your previous hesitation to make such a move, you find the strength to push forward and release the ties that once held you back. The melody evokes a sense of nostalgia, reflecting the complexity of love and loss as you come to terms with the decision to embrace a new beginning, leaving behind the memories that linger.

“Bye-bye, boy, bye. Bye-bye, and boy, bye. It's over, it's over, oh yeah.”

“This ain't the first time I've been hostage to these tears.” It isn’t your first rodeo in being in the wrong relationship; you’re familiar with heartbreak and the feeling that you don’t have a voice or say in your relationship. You used to hide in your tears like they had taken over you. “I can't believe I'm finally movin' through my fears.” However, things have changed this time. You finally stand up for yourself and move on from what feared you most. “At least, I know how hard we tried, both you and me, didn't we? Didn't we?” You assumed you were both trying hard not to call things off, but now you're wondering if it was just you trying to keep the relationship alive. “So I grab my stuff. Courtney just pulled up in the driveway; it's time.” You call things over, pack all of your things, and head out the door. Without hesitating, you know it is time to move away from this person.

“Bye-bye, Boy, bye, bye-bye. It's over, it's over. Oh yeah, bye-bye. I'm takin' what's mine, yeah. Bye-bye. It's over, it's over, oh yeah.” The contrast between the upbeat sound and the heartbreaking moment is so striking that it feels like a relief that you decided to end the relationship. Typically, breakup songs are sad and melancholy, but “bye” is the opposite. You validate your self-worth and take what you deserve. “You know, I'm stronger than I think. Usually, I'd join you on the floor, but this dance ain't for me.” At another time, perhaps when you were more fragile, you would have gone along with this person, following every step they took while not validating your decisions. “Boy, just turn the music up. Maybe someday, we'll look back with love.” You are letting them and allowing them to enjoy their lives rather than holding them back. You want peace for yourself and them, not holding any grudges. “Didn't think you'd lose me; now it's just too late to choose me.” This person might’ve felt as if they had power over you and that you would never stand up for yourself or make your voice heard. They assumed you’d keep stringing along all the way until you decided to stop. Now, it is too late for them to choose you; they took you for granted.

“Now it's certainly bittersweet; this hook feels too hard to sing. But it's better than repeat (than repeat, than repeat, than repeat)." The hook feeling ‘too hard to sing‘ resonates with the sentiments you’re experiencing, which are stirring. Although the emotions are heavy, it is more desirable than repeating the sorrowful ones.
